- I bought this exclusively for the maps, both the cover map an the (sizable) fold-out area map inside (immaculate).
- Lots of photos / maps inside, and huge chunks of advertising in front and back, including one for "Dr. J. Collis Browne's Chlorodyne — safe and reliable family remedy for INFLUENZA, coughs, colds, catarrh, asthma, bronchitis." Also something called "diarrhœa"!
- "Foreign Orders Receive Prompt Attention" — that's code! It's a papist plot! Man your punts!

Collis Browne's Mixture is still available in the UK. My father swears by it; I sometimes take it as cough mixture.
Rex--I'm just curious: You say you bought the book for its pristine maps, but then you say the book can be anyone's for the price of postage. Do you remove the maps first?
O dear god no, I would never tear anything out of a book. The fold-out map just made the book compelling to me. That's all.
I can attest that that guide remains relevant in that even today Gloucester, for all its strengths, has "none of the placid charm of Tewkesbury" (though it does indeed have "many features of interest").
