Paperback 334: The Partridge Family #5: Terror By Night / Vic Crume (Curtis Books 06148)

Paperback 334: Curtis Books 06148 (PBO, 1971)

Title:
Terror By Night
Author: Vic Crume
Cover artist: Photo

Yours for: $6

Best things about this cover:
  • Literally nothing about this cover — the pic, the design, nothing — says TERROR BY NIGHT. Is there a ghost in the amp? Is Keith gonna get blown away by some wicked feedback?
  • There's a weed-whacker on the wall.

Best things about this back cover:
  • "Downbeat for Danger!" should have been the title.
  • Why is "and when Keith" italicized???
  • "Provincetown was *nothing* like Keith expected..."

Page 123~

Keith Partridge and Bill Angelo, dripping wet, followed with another heavy box, and in back of them were eight men—three of them in handcuffs.

"Mom," said Keith, "it's not what you think."

Everything about that cover says TERROR BY NIGHT. Obviously, it's nighttime and the Partridge Family is going to sing at us! That's enough terror for me, thank you.

It turns out it was just Ruben Kinkade trying to get into the house to tell Shirley and the kids that he had booked them for a Save the Whales concert on Nantucket that weekend.

My hope is that this is actually a Partridge Family/H.P. Lovecraft mashup.

"But fun soon turns to fear when night comes to their lonely beach house near Innsmouth, and the Deep Ones rise out of the surf to take the rock stars back to Cyclopean and many-columned Y'ha-nthlei as offerings to Father Dagon."

Ya know, for once - just once - I'd like some character to say "Mom, it's exactly what you think it is."

I actually thought that the cover was self-explanatory as well. The only thing nearly as terrifying is the closing promise on the back cover, "Complete and Unabridged", in that imposing, all-caps font.
